Apps that users wish for

You’ve read blog posts and business articles telling you why you need to have a mobile app as part of your business strategy. You may be an established business, thinking of starting your business from a mobile platform and building from there, or perhaps you just like the idea of having a mobile app, but aren’t full of ideas. This month, we thought it would be a nice idea to give voice to what users are looking for to increase their productivity, assist them in gathering information, or just simply having fun.

Some business and government agencies actively enlist user ideas, helping them to create apps that are already sought after. One such government department is the EPA (http://www.epa.gov/mygreenapps/ideas.html). Users even rate ideas already posted!

There is a wealth of mobile app ideas from users at preaaps.com, so many that they are listed in 21 categories (http://www.preapps.com/app-ideas). On the landing screen, there is a section of top ideas and new app ideas. Users can vote on ideas posted. Preapps aim is to foster communication between developers and users to create higher quality, more successful apps, so developers can also post their ideas, and anyone can join and post ideas to generate feedback.

At ideaswatch.com, startup inspiration from the crowd, are 406 app ideas (http://www.ideaswatch.com/startup-ideas/app#). There are people looking to connect to other commuters for ridesharing, city parking finders, tutor finders, apps that connect to printers and can send work to them, or an e-commerce site that finds region specific goods such as souvenirs, handicrafts, and other non-branded products.

CoolNewBusinessIdeas.com has a section that is exclusive to mobile app ideas, and has at least 40 ideas posted currently. While these ideas are posted by users, these apps already exist, but are food for thought:

  • LiveNote app for Orchestral Performances: This app allows audiences to access information about the works they are hearing, with musical, emotional and historical highlights.
  • App to find produce that is ripe: Ripe Near Me is an app that aims to connect farms and backyard bounty with people trying to find ripe produce.
  • Next Glass: an app that you use your phone to scan a bottle of wine or beer and returns a score based on your preferences, with calorie count and alcohol by volume.

The Alabama School of Business remarks in The Future of Mobile Applications that the trends in mobile app develop in 2014 were:

  • Social networking – Fastest growing mobile application category
  • Context-aware marketing – Will improve user application experience
  • Location-based services – 1.4 Billion: Consumer LBS expected user base in 2014
  • Mobile search – Product and price comparison for consumer products
  • Mobile commerce – Will help streamline consumer shopping experience
  • Object recognition – Increase in sensor and processing capabilities
  • Mobile payment systems – 1 in 5 smartphones will be Near-Field Communications enabled
